After 45 Years I Got Rid of the Old Wench

Recommended Posts

It was an SK brand, which was good stuff, but it never worked that great.  You had to pry the sockets off it with a screwdriver.  I got sick of that.  Made me grumpy.

I picked up a new one with the angle thingy and the senior-friendly socket ejector button at Ace Hardware.

Made in China.

I found a Snap-On truck and bought my last 3/8" ratchet from him.

I hate the new China made Craftsman tools. They were an American legend for most of my life only to become equal to Walmart tools.

SK is / was a good brand. years ago a Welding supply co. within walking distance of my home carried SK tools. convenient seeing how in the early 80's I had a POS '68 VW Bug.   theres a local MATCO truck parked outside my friends local music store on Fridays after work.  I don't stand a chance. lol.

Snapons are excellent, but pricey. Mac or Matco  are a little easier on the wallet. great thing about those 3 are they have alot of specialized tools for Harleys. or anything really

That's on purpose, an old mechanic joke.

That and the rectum fryer.

And the peter meter.

Guess there's a lot of them we used all the time and never really thought about it.

Remember when Craftsman would have the deals where you could buy a whole set of wrenches or whatever for really cheap?  Like a hundred bucks for like 48 wrenches or something.  11 screwdrivers for $19.99 or whatever.  That's how I got most of that kind of stuff.

I had no idea Craftsman were MIC now. I only learned of them from an old Little Feat album where Lowell George says he uses (Sears & Roebuck) Craftsman 11/16" socket wrench for a guitar slide 'because you can get them most anywhere'.

Strap Snap-On still 100% USA I hope?

Craftsman still has a US line and it looks like most of their Chinese stuff has the same warranty.

Sears really took a beating, there are now 17 stores left in the US.

I think Strap On and Matco are US made.  I know at least one local Matco guy sells moonshine out of his truck (not from personal experience, an old co-worker from years back used to buy it).

To stay afloat you see so many US businesses having a domestic line and then imported stuff - Buck Knives, Red Wing Boots, you name it.  Gibson and Epiphone, Fedner and Fedner made somewhere else line, Martin and Mexican Martins...

Yep.

My wife bought me a really nice 3 drawer (plastic) box right before they went under. I never let it leave the music room and still have every single American built piece of it.

Nowadays, if I want China tools, I get them from Harbor Freight.

I was very fortunate. At 16, my uncle in the Air Force, gave me a whole tool chest full of tools. Craftsman and I added Snap on to it in my racing days. I had more tools than I needed so my wife gave me a very large Tool Chest to hold them all several years back. Now full of metric and standard. 2 drawers just for hammeres. Have a gardening tool drawer, one for scissors, Kineves, Automotive like oil wrenches, timing light, All my battery chargers are in the top and it has outlets for them and plugs to a 110 with a on/off switch.

Wow, slow your roll. Guitar porn only please. No need for the Grey Goose to be unleased.
