Praise for P-90s

In a poll I did a couple of weeks ago, I found that humbuckers were the most-preferred pick-up.

And I get it. No hum; nice and clean; great look.

But for me, there's just something about the growl of the P-90. There's just nothing like that treble-y bite and the way the power chords ring when I crank up my SG Classic.

So, P-90 fans, I want to hear it!

I love the P90s in my Casino, I have been gassing for a solid body guitar with P90s so we'll see.

Here are 3 clips from SIFREDI, he is a professional musician and hangs out in the Gibson Spain Forum.

The 3 clips have really good sound. I told him I would post these next time P90s were the subject of conversation.

I Absolutely Love P90s!!!

I have them on my Epiphone Casino and my Gibson ES-330

And I just modded an old ESP/LTD/EC-50

With Mean 90s from GFS

And it sounds 200% better.

And I might add the response to the pick, both in tone and dynamics.

In most cases, the hum from my P90s is so slight that it is not noticed in the rooms that I perform in. The beautiful sound and pick response more than make up for any slight hum I get, especially since at playing volumes, that hum is never heard but the tone and pick response is.

With a little FX I can make the P90 sound close to a humbucker, but there is nothing you can do to make a humbucker sound like a P90.

I also have an SG Classic and love the P-90s. I'm not saying I like them more than the HB's but do prefer them for certain sounds. "Growl" is a very good description of their sound with some overdrive. They have a great clean sound too.

I actually don't even mind the hum, as it reminds me that the guitar is "alive" and ready to pounce! What I notice about overdriven chords on P-90s vs. 'buckers is that if you hit a power chord and let it rind out, the 'bucker tends to melt away nicely without too much fuss. On the P-90s, it's like every note, every overtone, every sound is fighting it out to be heard. Finally, I can't think of a tone I like more than Woodstock/Leeds/Wight-era live WHO. That's what sold me.

I keep saying I'm going to put a p94 in the neck of my Robot. It's about time I quit talking about it and do it. I've got to do something to make me want to play the Robot. That might just do it.

I'm not a Big p-90 fan. Too "Thick" for what I want out of a Single Coil. Fender Tex-Mex or Hot Noiseless for my single coil pleasures. Although I'll be swapping out my old Standard Pickups for Lace California Series pickups in my 88 Stratocaster soon.

For me, I like Two Guitars in front line as my book ends. A Gibson with Humbuckers and a Fender with Single Coils. Right Now, that's my '95 Nighthawk and my '04 Deluxe Players Stratocaster. I also keep a Squier Trans Strat with Duncan Designed Humbuckers for E flat tuning.

These recordings are made through Pro Tools and a Line 6 Tone Port. But he swears by the combination of any Gibson and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. He owns a couple of Marshalls but for a few years now he tours with the Hot Rod Deluxe.

He mentioned this a while ago so I am really curious about the combination, I have a friend that has one of those amps so I will try it out in the first opportunity.
