A few years ago I started a "life's list". I'll still have a concert pop into my head from the seventies that I had previously forgotten about, and I haven't updated it recently with a bunch of jazz shows I've been to.

I grew up, and still live, outside St. Louis, Missouri, which has always been one of the three MAJOR concert stops in the Midwest along with Chicago and Kansas City. So just about EVERYONE has come through here. Here's the ones I chose to attend because I had some interest in the performers AND could afford the ticket price. As you can see, my interests are pretty diverse, from Willie, Waylon and Merle, to fusion acts like Weather Report. I think I've covered the whole spectrum.

Larry, I can't top that. I'd bet a lot/most/maybe all of those were fun.

I've seen (in no particular order):

Rush

Jefferson Starship

Gary Duncan

Tom Constanten

Dr. John

"Weird Al" Yankovic

The Outlaws

New Riders of the Purple Sage

Good Rats

Sonny Landreth

Richie Havens

Tom Paxton

And I've seen a handful of local acts and tribute bands. I can't pick a favorite, but I've seen Dr. John a few times and he's been incredible for every one of them. Same goes (like him or not) for "Weird Al"--that dude knows how to put on a show.

I'm seeing Johnny Winter on Wednesday. [biggrin]

Way too many to name. The last show I hit was She and Him and my next will be On Fillmore this coming Monday. High Priest Church of the Sonic guitar and Wilco axe slinger Nels Cline will be sitting in with the duo.

Some memorable shows

- Met Moe Tucker and Sterling Morison after Moe Tucker's set in '94.

- Had my first hearing injury seeing Tad at a 50 person capacity club in '93. They brought Marshall stacks and cranked 'em.

- Brian Jonestowns Massacre twice: once at a small club with the original lineup and once at Lollapalooza 2005 with the Dandy Warhols.

- Buddy Guy at WDET music festival 1990. Was about ten rows back. That cat came down the isle during a solo. Bela Fleck also played that year.

- Les Paul at the Iridium in NYC, about two years before he passed away.

Hey Lp, I grew up in St. Louis and saw most of my concerts there from Mississipi Nights, the opera house, The Arena(Checkerdome), Kiel Aud. and Busch Stadium. Remember the kite flying contests when Rush played for free 1 year and ZZ Top played another year. Lots of good times.

Hey Rewddawg1 and LPguitarman,

looks like we were probably all at a bunch of concerts together. I can't believe I didn't see you there...and reading your lists reminded me of some more I'd forgotten.

Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, and somebody else (was a guys name) on one bill at Kiel Auditorium. Bugs Henderson a couple of times, once at Off Broadway and once at Generations. Crosby & Nash at the Sheldon on election night 2008. And I know I was at least two KSHE kite flys, I THINK I remember the Rush thing, and also Charlie Daniels.

My favorite St. Louis concert venues were the Ambassador Theater, The Kiel Opera House, and under that stars at the Mississippi River Festival at the SIU-E. In order listed above: demolished, boarded up, and grown over.

Only saw a couple of shows at the old Busch Stadium, The Who, and a Kool Jazz Festival show headlined by George Benson. I was offered a ticket to one of the Super Jams (Supertramp I believe), but didn't go. I didn't see any of the 70's R&R shows at the run-down Fox Theater before the rehab, but have seen many there since the restoration. Do you guys remember the Westport Playhouse and The American Theater? And then there were the summer outdoor concerts at the Muni.

St. Louis was full of 20' & 30's movie palaces and stage show theaters. During the late 60's and through the 70's they became venues for some great rock & roll shows, and pretty nice digs for a bunch of stoned-out hippies to hang around in.

I guess my current favorite place to see concerts these days is the Sheldon Concert Hall. I've also had the opportunity to play there five times myself, so it holds a special place.

Hey L5Larry, What's up man. I saw a few great concerts at the Kiel Opera House. One of the more memorable was Judas Priest w/ UFO opening. Now for those that don't know, the acoustics in an opera house is set up so a singer without the use of a microphone can be heard at a decent level in any seat in the house. Now we were fortunate (I think) to get 2nd row center seats. Now UFO comes out and does close to an hour set. Everything on their live album Strangers in the Night plus more. They were loud to say the least. At intermission our ears were ringing. Then out comes Priest. They crank it up even louder. Rob Halford is belting out his famous high notes exceeding the guitar playing at times. I think it took 2-3 days to get my hearing back but it was worth the experience. This was when Priest's Hell Bent For Leather had just been released. Everything from Unleashed in the East was played plus alot more. So if I can't hear you at times this was part of the reason. Keep on Rockin!

Rewd.

Yup, been there, done that. Many memories from all of the above locations + Verizon Amphitheatre, The Fox, The Pageant, Jefferson Barracks and Concerts on the Riverfront. St. Louis has always been a great place for music.

Didn't get a chance to actually see Rush at Forest Park (KSHE Kite Flying Contest), but I saw them several times since then. When I saw Charlie Daniels last October, he mentioned his first concert in St. Louis was the KSHE Kite Fly with Rush as the opening act. They've come a long way since then.

I need to go to more concerts! [scared] :o

I've been to the Grand Ole Opry; seen Kathy Mattea, Graham Nash, and Ricky Skaggs record a TV show (At the Ryman); Saw Robert Earl Keen & Waylon Jennings; saw Suzy Bogguss play @ the CMHoF. There's been other deals I've seen, but nothing more than fairs or the like :(
