Spending money on guitars...

It seems that every time I get a new one I tell myself that I have everything I need.

I really do have everything I NEED. Want on the other hand is a different story.

When my wife lost her job last March, the priorities changed. She is now effectively retired and I want to retire in about 5 years. I'm 49 now. Our house can be paid off in 5 years if I can swing a few extra payments here and there.

I don't see too many new guitars in my future until then but it IS my 50th birthday this summer.

My problem isn't money....it's room.... the wife was pretty upset when I bought the 'Bird..... she says I have too many guitars, etc.

I'm hoping a mandolin won't push her over the edge.....

I did clean out my son's old closet, and put almost everything in there, (out of sight, out of mind), and she REALLY likes that.

My Showman amp, Bassman amp, and Fender Passport wouldn't fit in the closet, so they're elsewhere, but aren't noticable, (much).

Oddly enough at the moment I'm in one of my 'get rid of the stuff I never play' moods.

Nothing has gone yet but I'm very tempted to sell-off most things; keeping just one LP and my G-J plus my first-ever electric and acoustic (sentiment).

Hopefully this phase will pass soon...........

Dunnow - I turned 52 and hit a total of 18 instruments last year, and I think the GAS is finally abating a bit. I currently have a Guild S-100, an SG and a Fender P-lyte in various stages of restoration, and when the spousal unit said I needed to finish those before I got any more, I actually agreed! It's hell getting old........

Hmm, we should speak about this.

My wife pays no attention to detail on almost everything.....for example, "What kind of car went by?" My wife: "A blue one...I think...."

So I figured I could sneak a new axe into the stable one time....well, wouldn't you know that she recognized it right away...."I've never seen THAT one before!" [scared]

She wouldn't notice the money coming out of the bank account?

Shred, this reminds me of something that happened many years ago....my wife NEVER looks at our bank accounts.... doesn't pay the bills, only writes checks......

So, for our 10th anniversary, (24 years ago), I bought her a Mercedes 450 SL.

I paid cash and parked it at her mother's house 'til the day of our anniversary....well... like 2 days before "the day", she calles me at work in a panic! She says,

"THERE'S A LOT OF MONEY MISSING OUT OF OUR ACCOUNT!!!"

I tell her.... don't sweat it...I'll call the bank and straighten it out....

then stalled her for a couple of days 'til I could surprise her with a new car.

If guitars are like women, apparently i have a thing for multiple indonesians and a tricolored mexican [wub] thank god for the clearance rack !!

I have a friend who says "If you are what you eat, them I'm fast, cheap and easy."

I never asked her if it was true!

This is where I'm at too. It's making less and less sense to me to have quantity over quality ... and, more and more, I play only my #1. But, like you, I have rarely-played guitars that, for sentimental reasons, I want to keep.

I have to agree with your wife 100% on this one. If you ever feel like offloading some, you can send them my way. I'll even be a gent and pay for shipping. Did I mention that I'm getting married? :-({|=

My problem isn't money....it's room....

This,

I have an 11'x15' dedicated room and with 10 guitars and 5 amps and a powered PA speaker I feel the room is crowded,

Right now I have a strict policy of only replacing anything I sell, I did sell my Casino a few weeks ago so although I have a pretty good idea of what I am getting next I am not buying anything that I do not absolutely love.

Even if I get another house with more room I am not buying more new gear, only replacing.

I sometimes feel like instead of owning gear, gear owns me, too many guitars that need setups, oil, tweaks, replacing parts, software, pedals, etc.

I am working slowly in having most of my stuff in tip top shape and what doesn't get played is out the door.

It may sound crazy but at this point I do not want to spend a lot of money on guitars

Well then, I can't send you a guitar or two without a permission slip from the new wife!

Did I mention that our home is 3500 sq. ft? Plus we have a 10' X 12' shed, (the dogs use it)....and I STILL have run out of room!
