LarryUK
Mmm.No surprises there. But how come Steve Lukather always gets missed from every list? Then there's Neal Schon? Andy Timmons? Albert Lee? You never see these on lists yet Luke has played on more records than anyone. I don't think these or other lists really pick them on talent. They pick them on how famous they are or the hits they've played on. In my opinion, the most fluent player out there is probably Paul Gilbert. I've never seen a player play with such ease. How about explaining why you've picked a player? You've both picked John Lennon. Why?
charlie brown
Why John Lennon? Well, aside from being "a Beatle"...he was a great "rhythmer!" Nice finger-picker, too. Never mind awesome song writer. My "guitar hero's" are not always just for their playing ability, alone. As to why some are "always left off?" Good question! But, again..as I stated at the end of my "list," there are just so many great players. A lot of great Jazz players, and some awesome Classical, and Country players are also (almost) never mentioned. One reason I don't really get into "best" lists, very often. You caught me at a weak moment. CB

btoth76
Hello! Since "last week" - when we discussed this previously - I've added Don Roeser to my list. Randy Rhoads is still the first, for two decades now. Cheers... Bence
saturn
I like lists that say "favorite" over "best". You generally don't need to justify why a player is your favorite. You're not saying they are "better" than some other guitarist. You just like their stuff for some reason. OK just my .02 .... So. Saying that, it is still hard to narrow down to 10. If we looked at all my responses to these things over the years there would be some different names, depending on who popped into my head at that moment. The first 6 would probably be the same every time..... SRV Jimi Hendrix Jimmy Page (not for his technical skill, that's for sure) Dicky Betts Randy Rhodes EVH George Harrison Joe Walsh Mark Knopfler David Gilmore resist temptation to list more...... buliwyf
I gotta agree with most of all everyone's choices. However for some reason (in my opinion) everyone forgets John Sykes.Played in some darn good bands - Tygers of Pan Tang - Thin Lizzy - Whitesnake - Blue Murder (one of my top favorite bands) and some great solo work.Plays a Les Paul and Gibson even had a sig custom shop one done.Sorry but he seems to be missed in a lot of favorite guitar player threads. Who else on my list. Jimmy Page Randy Rhodes Billy Gibbons Steve Vai Steven Stills Jimmy Page,IMHO He deserves to be included twice, Les Paul Lindsey Buckingham Nancy Wilson. - The blond one,I always mix them up! I don't get out much and I don't read guitar magazines. I picked my list based on what I personally listen to and enjoy. Not on what someone else has said about who should be what. I picked Lennon because he was my favorite Beatle and I think his playing was great. I put Neil Young on there too. And for that matter Zappa at the top. None of these three are the most technical virtuoso's but they all have a style I love. Not to mention this was my list. Feel free to put whomever you like on yours. STEVIL
This is a tough one, because I admire a lot of guitar players from many bands. I think 10 is pretty restrictive tbh. If I really had to pick the ones that are always constant in my top ten bands etc I listen to, then here goes (No Particular order): 1. Pete Townshend (The Who). 2. Glen Buxton & Michael Bruce (Alice Cooper band). 3. Jimi Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix Experience). 4. Omar Rodriguez - Lopez & Jim Ward (At The Drive In). 5. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath). 6. Ron Asheton & James Williamson (Iggy & The Stooges). 7. James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers). 8. Steve Jones (Sex Pistols). 9. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin). 10. Jack White (White Stripes, Raconteurs). That's just some............

How about explaining why you've picked a player? You've both picked John Lennon. Why? It is not a whos better list, but who are your favorites list. To me, being a guitar influence on me means playing on great songs with a great band. I love Luke's playing (he played on Peter Criss's 1978 solo album!), but I was never a Toto fan. Neal Schon is great, but I don't care for Journey. Andy Timmons...Well I like him a lot. I would consider myself a fan of his. Albert Lee...Phenomenal player, just not a style I really listen to. Paul Gilbert is one of my favorites. I picked my 10 guys because they do something for me: touch my heart with their playing. Ace Frehley may not be as technical or as knowledgeable as someone like Steve Vai, but he played with feeling and soul and created some of the greatest guitar solos. He played for the song. Sure, he can't shred or have a lot of tricks up his sleeve like Vai or Gilbert, but for the kind of rock music he plays, he's as good as anyone. milod
I think this is kinda impossible. My criteria tend to be as much to do with taste as well as skills. That's why I'd go with such as Segovia, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, BB, yeah to Mike Bloomfield, Leo Kottke, Mark Knopfler, obviously Chet... and hundreds of others who play with taste regardless of style. There are so very many, however, unknown weekend warriors who can drive you mad with their abilities both in terms of musical skills and taste as well as how they've managed to make a living with music but never became "big." m
