IanHenry Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 A generation of young musicians lost during the 60's and 70's denying the world of their talent, who knows what those people would have produced if they'd lived longer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bld_-7gzJ-o Ian
IanHenry Posted August 26, 2016 Author Posted August 26, 2016 Yeah but she screamed too much. I always wanted to marry a Woman that moaned a lot. Be careful what you wish for  Ian
SteveFord Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 I liked Mama Cass' reaction. I always thought that was the greatest female performance ever.
Karloff Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 I liked Mama Cass' reaction. I always thought that was the greatest female performance ever. yep. i agree with both comments.
jdgm Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 She was at least 20 years ahead of her time - in terms of the acceptance of her singing style. She paid the price many times over IMO. I saw her. http://www.royalalberthall.com/about-the-hall/news/2016/january/21-april-1969-janis-joplin-electrifed-at-her-only-royal-albert-hall-performance/

RevDavidLee Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 My Grandfather Levi lived in San Francisco during the late 60's & early 70's and I had the privilege of seeing Janis Joplin with Big Brother & the Holding Company perform at the Fillmore West during the time I stayed with him out there. I can tell you that my reaction was the same as Mama Cass's was - I could not believe the grit, blues and volume coming out of this relatively small framed white woman. :o I also enjoyed the Haight Ashbury scene and the smell of incense in the air when you got close to the neighborhood, the great stores & small shops throughout that area, beautiful women (yes with flowers in their hair) - I remember a great deal of discovery and enlightenment during my stay there. I have fond memories of it and my Grandfather's embrace of the culture and the scene there. Thanks Grandfather for being so cool - R.I.P.
Big Bill Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Yeah but she screamed too much. I also have the scratches on my back to prove it.

jaxson50 Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Ever hear Janis before the Big Brother years? This is a tape of Jorma Kaukonen and Janis rehearsal recorded in 1964, they did an acoustic act at the time. IMO she sounded better before she became famous, I never really liked the screaming thing. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EO2mWTpcb48 http://www.thebluegrassspecial.com/archive/2012/january2012/videos-january-2012.html

surfpup Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 She and Steve Marriot were both a little over the top for me vocally. I appreciate their voices, it just seemed like too much squalin' especially when they performed live.
Zentar Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzgDz04bv38&list=RDWPF8r_4nykI&index=6 She and Steve Marriot were both a little over the top for me vocally. He may be the most underrated rocker of all time. Most Americans only know him through Humble Pie which I thought was not equal to any other part of his career but if you listen to Street Rats by Humble Pie he did good work there too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzgDz04bv38&list=RDWPF8r_4nykI&index=6
Zentar Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Do you think Clapton can match the singing AND guitar in this diddy?
surfpup Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Do you think Clapton can match the singing AND guitar in this diddy? Well, Clapton is a mediocre singer, so that bar is set pretty low.
jdgm Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Well, Clapton is a mediocre singer, so that bar is set pretty low. I hate it when I have to endure his croak on Wonderful Tonight. His new live 2CD set is a San Diego concert with J J Cale..... [lol]
badbluesplayer Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Janis could kind of sing two differrnt notes at once.
jdgm Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Yeah but she screamed too much. Janis could kind of sing two differrnt notes at once. hey bbp I hope you are well and enjoying those beautiful amps..... And you are right on both counts. James Brown did both too. What an incredible spirit though. To sing like that; to love the music and understand it well enough to want to follow it through. Sure she f***ed up but she was ahead of her time. Never underestimate a woman from Texas...
Retired Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 1472246915[/url]' post='1794604']Never cared much for Janis. The bands that backed her were so so. I do like Mercedes Benz and Move Over and that is about it. Me either. Couldn't stand listening to her.
