Flight959 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Guys! On a scale of 1-10 with Ten being the best and one the worst, where is your Standard of playing?? Anyone fancy a play off competition after Christmas? You all have nice guitars but can you make them sing? A piece maybe a solo or a riff to play is announced then members have to learn it...then members post Youtube/myspace type clips of them playing.... Its open to EVERYONE gig monsters and Beginners.... I'd put myself around the 5 mark... What do you reckon ladies!! Regards Flight959
RichCI Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I don't think of playing as a competition but I consider myself to be good but not great. My brother describes my style of being like a cross between The Black Crows and Black Flag so, while I play rock and roll, I have zero issues with throwing in a bunch of dissonant noise when applicable which some might consider to be garbage but it's intentional "garbage."
MikeRom Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Depends on who's judging. In front of non-players I might be rated somewhere's between 8 - 10. In front of you guys probably a solid 6.
Thermionik Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 On a scale of 1 to 10..... Where 10 is like, Cooder/Hendrix/Clapton/Beck/King/King/King/Lee etc etc Where 1 is like, a tone deaf guy with boxing gloves on playing a banjo. I'm about minus (pi-squared)..... But bring it on - a little public humiliation won't hurt me, might do me some good. Do we get to do the arrangement?
Flight959 Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 To be honest guys...It will be a harmless bit of fun where everyone can input what they have to offer.. A bit of New Year fun.. Im open to suggestions and ideas.. Flight959
Taylor Player Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 On fingerstyle acoustic I would put myself in the 7-8 catagory.... On electric leads and such, probably a 2......... (Guess that my hopes to be a shredder are a long way off.... )
80LPC Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Will allowances be made for my Teisco with a 1 inch action ?
Homz Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 If in the zone then I am a 6. If not a 3. If I've had a few drinks then I'm a 2; however, I think I am a 9. Best to go with my strengths and drink (a lot).
Thundergod Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I would say 3... people that know me would probably say 7... drunk people in the audience will most surely say 11, but they would judge my playing by the fact that I have a 5 guitar stand on stage, with 5 guitars and play a Gibson. Of course when I still had my guitar god long hair they would have said "that guy plays better than brian may and jimmy page toghether... let's give him a 20"
Dynadude Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Guys! On a scale of 1-10 with Ten being the best and one the worst' date=' where is your Standard of playing?? And would a sound bite do? Vids can be a pain. Oh yea. Since I haven't gigged in about 7 years, my skills have really suffered, so I'd say I'm in the 3-4 range. There was a time I could pick up a song on the fly, but, age and lack of time to practice takes it's toll.
cvansickle Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 In the past 10 years or so, I've grown to recognize that my playing has actually become pretty good. I'm not a virtuoso, but I don't suck either. But it took a long time to get here. I wouldn't say the same about my playing abilities in the 80s.
deepblue Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 "Good" compared to whom? Compared to Angus Young im a God...Compared to Jeff Beck in still suckling the teat.
rocketman Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Oh I could never rate myself these days and I'm a piano player first. For piano I think I used to be good because I did get accepted to Berklee and Eastman but who knows really. I will say that I do know a lot about music theory.
Tim Plains Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Can't answer that 'cause I don't play...I just grab a guitar and pose in front of the mirror all the time.
Ian Martin Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I am the illegitimate child of Axe and Tim, so you know I've got the goods. I get all my good skillz0rzzz from daddy Axe's side though.
rmngretsch14 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 The bassists of the world would be shocked by the modesty of the guitarists on this forum. And I'll have to answer that question with a quote --Hound Dog Taylor~ "When I die they'll say: He couldn't play sh!t but he sure made it sound good" And maybe I only make it sound good when I'm in the zone--and I'll have to admit to being very limited, I can play some blues, folk, and a bit of rock n' roll, but that's as far as I'll stretch
80LPC Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Who's judging ? Like Les Paul said, "people hear with their eyes". So I'll be getting dressed up as one of those women in the Robert Palmer video...Come to think of it, wasn't one of them a man ?
Tim Plains Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Last time I was in Nebraska was around 20 years ago when I toured with Aerosmith. I remember AXE and I tag-teamed this one broad after a show...but she said she was on the pill, couldn't be yer mum. If it is, I feel deceived...
djroge1 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I am the illegitimate child of Axe and Tim' date=' so you [i']know[/i] I've got the goods. I get all my good skillz0rzzz from daddy Axe's side though. eeewwwww!! does that mean like Tim is your mom? Now thats gross
cajunman831 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 i,m average.never judged.just love to play
djroge1 Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I dunno? Probably a I, IV, or a V? Could be a II-VI I can't rate myself?
daveinspain Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 Well as a guitar player I suck... Haven't been at it as long as all you guys. I might not have even made the scale yet... But as a producer and mixer I can hold my own with the best of them.... Does that count?
AXE® Posted December 8, 2008 Posted December 8, 2008 I do have seven little bast*rd kids running around... They call one low E'an... hmmm.
