Just bought new L-00 Standard; where to attach guitar strap?

Hey everybody. I just (literally today) received  my first Gibson! It is a brand new L-00 standard in vintage sunburst from Sweetwater. It’s incredible. The smell, the finish, the sound; it’s just perfect. Beautiful! I do have a question. I don’t see a two places to attach  a guitar strap, is this normal for L-00?

When I get a new Martin I usually need to install the button in the end on the guitar, as the strap button is in a small bag. You either need to install a strap button on your neck (I never do that). I do the shoe lace trick up by the nut.

You should already have one strap button installed down on the bridge end of the guitar. Gibson’s come with this strap button already installed ( this is a Gibson forum, not a Martin forum. Only Martin ships their guitars without the strap button installed).

for attaching the guitar st the other end, you either need to secure it around the headstock or have a shop add a strap button to the heel )they’ll usually charge $20/25 to do this).

Hey, mystery solved. I looked through the cool stuff that Gibson had sent in the guitar case; and the other strap thing was in there. So I guess it’s an option if you want to attach it. But I’m not sure I can ever bring myself to screw this into this guitar. Lol.

This is my first Gibson. I’m blown away. The smell, this finish.  the clarity of how it sounds. Plays great too. I just love it. Thx everybody.

Welcome to Gibsonville. Here is Frank Ford’s page on the ins and outs of strap buttons: http://frets.com/FretsPages/Musician/GenSetup/StrapButton/strapbutton1.html

I sometimes use “choker” straps (the strap that goes around the peghead) but the shoestring thing always struck me as cheap. When I lived in Kuwait, I had a shoe shop make some bona ride choker straps to my specifications. You can buy similar straps online, though.

Congratulations to L-00 ownership!

I was playing my Gibson Blues King L-00 when a friend was over, about 5 years ago, and he went away with THE FEVER.

Seems like the next day, (wasn't) he was back with his Blues King!

Mine on the right of photo, his on the left......(mine is 2007 bubinga back and sides/sitka, his is 2015 mahogany/sitka):

The thing that most interests me is the smell of the guitar, which BWS described as "perfect".

What exactly does the perfect guitar smell, smell like?

I need to know so I can start guitar-sniffing the next time I visit the music store.

Please and thanks,

I have this on all my guitars.

As I was politely told a few post back, this is a Gibson Forum not a Martin Forum. How can you get the proper thump if you use that Martin product on a Gibson?

Staple gun !

"There I fixed it!"

DOH

kidding, of course.

It is easy to do but I can understand if your a bit squeamish about drilling into the heel.

I usually start with a smaller drill, and mark the depth of the screw (with the screw in the strap pin)  on the bit.

The mounting hole should be at about the mid point part of the body, on the floor facing side of the heel.

You can pit a small piece of painters tape on the area if you are worried about the start of the hole.

Once you have the smaller hole drilled to the right depth, mark the "regular" sized bit to the same depth.

Be mindful of the angle you want that hole.

When deciding what bit to use for the final hole, you can line up the screw to the bit, all you should see is the screw edges from behind the drill bit.

You can put a small drop of liquid soap on the screw to help lube the screw as you set it in.

You can also use  felt washers so you're not abutting the metal of the pin to the Finish on the heel.

My rule of thumb is drills do not go near my guitars. Picks and capos and cases are allowed. Drills - nope.

One slip and you better have a lot of tissues on hand.

I've done it dozens of times. I should mention that I worked at music store as a teacher back about 20 yeas ago.  I'd help Dave (At the time, the co-owner and main tech) do small tech setup work now and then

Change strings for students, do some mild setup work. and did a few of these strap pins.  Never had a mis que (YET!)

That is great, but we have all seen those plastic surgery disaster women, and they were worked on my people who went through years of schooling and training, and are considered specialists in their field.

If you haven't drilled a strap button  hole before, it is probably better to get a guitar tech to do it.

Meanwhile you can use a boot lace tied to a guitar strap and the headstock. You can also buy a headstock leather tie to attach to your guitar strap and headstock:

How was the neck for you?

As far as strap pin, I just sit when I play nowadays so it doesn't matter to me but when I did, I preferred adding the strap mentioned by Forty. I have guitars with and without the pin on the neck heel and balance-wise I prefer the balance of using a strap. The new 2022 Gibson I have came with a pin as yours. I doubt I'll be using it.

I have this on all my guitars.

The issue I have with those gizmos that sit right behind the nut is that they interfere with my fretting hand if I’m playing in first position.

I prefer the choker straps that allow you to run the headstock strap like this:

I've never heard anyone ever complain that the holes drilled through the bridge and soundboard top for the bridge pins are somehow wounding the instrument, so why on earth would drilling a hole at the base of the neck for a strap pin be considered to be a wound?

And as for attaching one end of the strap however one does it at the end of the headstock, I feel that there is vastly more risk of damage ocurring if the strap is accidently snagged or tugged on than if the attachment is on a strap pin at the base of the neck.

None of my four acoustics came with straps, and to attach them, I had strap pins installed (by a Luthier in each case) at the neck base. For me, the headstock base was never a consideration.

I wish had a photo of the  ES-335 that came in one day where the owner had used a saber saw and removed the area on the back of the guitar where the volume and tone controls are.

That 335 I believe was a pre 70's model.  Oh the humanity!

That’s priceless. I don’t understand why they don’t put control covers on ES’s. Going through the F-hole to change pots and caps is ridiculous. My BB had a cover but no F-holes. I guess that’s why. My tone did not suffer due to it.

Is that the one you had made?
