kelly campbell
I agree that there is no "Best" .

Phil OKeefe
Pete was a Best, but he wasn't the best. Apparently, Ringo was. Ringo was also a Starr. But that's drums, not guitar.

RBSinTo
Before something or someone can be called the best, it is necessary to define the term, otherwise the designation is meaningless. RBSinTo
merciful-evans
I agree with the assertion. In fact I've not heard a better explanation than that. Would Hendrix have improved the Beach Boys? I used to think the important thing about a player was how much he/she knew. I was wrong, but at least it was measurable. Trouble is, the jazz guys would be up there and the blues players (3 chords and 5 notes) always in the shallow end. Its nowhere near inclusive enough. Many of my musician friends insisted that its all about the best technique. They were wrong. country pickers, metal shredders, flamenco players use different instruments and different techniques. You cant compare like for like. The OP pretty much has it.

Yep - Clapton seemed to agree and wanted his third album's title to be longer... RBSinTo
I'm currently the best guitar player in our home because The Lovely Missus RBSinTo has never played the guitar, and my music bud who is much better than me, and comes over to play is not here. How's that? RBSinTo
Sgt. Pepper
If we are gonna go to talk technique, Allan Holdsworth can run circles around Jimi, and the other Jimmy too. Damn near around any Jimmy, well when Allan was alive. What about Robert Fripp? He's a sad little wanker now reduced to making Sunday Lunch videos with his wife Toyah, but man can that weirdo play. And Jimi thought Rory Gallagher and Terry Kath were both "better" than him. Edited February 27 by Sgt. Pepper
Murph
The best pickers play bluegrass. The ones who can't keep up play other genres.

I have a Doc and Merle Watson album, and man what playing on there. Tony Rice was absolutely insane on guitar. 1

I've heard multiple variations on that story, including Phil Keaggy and Billy Gibbons. Apparently either Jimi said that about a lot of people, or it's been misapplied. I honestly do not know for sure either way, but I suspect he humbly expressed admiration for a lot of different players as a way to respond to the incessant questions about "what is it like to be the world's best/greatest guitarist?" Well it was Jimi, and we all know he N E V E R got high, so there is that. I'm sure every guitarist has a player they admire and thinks is "better" than them. Edited February 27 by Sgt. kidblast
people get way too hung up on that question. I was at new years eve party, and someone had asked me if I was still playing and of course, "yes" another person listening in on that conversation proceeded to ask who I thought was the best drummer, bass player, guitar player, Band -- twas easy 1: Neil Peart 2: Geddy Lee 3: Alex Lifeson 4: Rush I already knew he hated Rush, Thankfully that ended the conversation right there! There is no BEST, there's just GREATNESS and it's a legion of players strong. Edited February 27 by kidblast 1

Many players are great, but there is no best. No one can quantify who is the best. . . but he played with his teeth, and behind his back. Just B S showmanship. Edited February 27 by Sgt.
