Gilliangirl
Rattle and Hum (does that count?) Pulp Fiction American Graffiti (love the scene when they're going to race and Booker T and the MG's is playing Green Onions.... YEAH!) Crazy Heart Wizard of Oz (can't help it, it's my favourite movie of all time) I can't find the name of the other one I wanted to list.... it starred Peter Fonda and Nancy Sinatra and it was a biker movie. Peter Fonda was 'Blue'. This is an old old OLD movie. I'll keep looking for it. Anyway, we loved it in the 60's.

SweetMarie
What happened to real soundtrack music? Soundtracks today are nothing more than "mix tapes" of someone's play list' date=' some of which weren't even in the movie but in the end credits and had nothing to do with the movie at all. Gilliangirl
The Commitments. Oh yeah! I forgot about that one. Loved it! The other one I couldn't remember was the biker movie 'The Wild Angels'. I guess the soundtrack was done by a band called Davie Allan and the Arrows: Biography Providing the soundtrack to numerous biker and teen exploitation movies in the mid- and late '60s' date=' Davie Allan & the Arrows bridged the surf and psychedelic eras. Their driving, basic instrumentals featured loads and loads of fuzz guitar, as well as generous dollops of tremolo bar waggling and wah-wah. Anyway, if anyone's still reading this, here's the link..... Wild Angels p.s. don't go there unless you're really a fan of obscure 60's music

Robin Nahum
Showing my age, but for me the following films had the most memorable soundtracks: 2001 - A Space Odyssey and I'm just about to have a really good listen to Ligeti Death in Venice - Wikipedia reminds me that the main theme music is Mahler's Adagietto from his Fifth Symphony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_in_Venice_(film)) Elvira Madigan - Wikipedia again reminds me that the soundtrack features the Andante from Piano Concerto No. 21 in C (K 467) by Mozart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvira_Madigan_(film)) I also dug Ry Cooder's slide playing in Paris, Texas. But there are some writers/directors that incorporate a lot of really good music into their movies. Again, Quentin Tarantino comes to mind. In fact, some of the music in his movies becomes synonymous with the scenes in which they are played. But I can agree with you in a way, not everyone has the keen ear for picking music for movies and they try anyway with poor results. Soundtracks for Wes Anderson movies usually have a good mix of the two, so there can be a happy medium

I chalk a lot of that up to him using a specific song to drive a scene. IMO, even though it's using unscored music, his use of it is incorporated into the film in a way an actor or a prop would be, if you catch what I'm saying. So it is essential to the film. saturn
There are so many movies that have a great soundtrack, that are really just a playlist of classic songs. I think more of original scores, like Star Wars for example. Smokey and the Bandit actually had a good soundtrack. I remember as a kid, my parents had the 8 Track of Earthquake soundtrack. It had some really pretty music, and I think some of the pieces were also used in Superman The Movie.
