Does that "E" on the pick guard only bug me?

When my Epis were on the way I came damn close to ordering a new pick guard so it would get there at the same time just because of the "E". I thought it was like a permanent fixture. When it got there I saw it's just an emblem with stickum. Looks so much nicer without it. Is it just me or what? I wouldn't want a Gibson with a big "G" on the pick guard or a Fender w/an "F". I think it looks kinda stooped. I don't think those Es were put there to be permanent. Everyone please remove them now. Or else leave all the tags & stickers intact. Well it's probably just me but I think it's tacky.

Geoffsct, are you new to epiphones by any chance? [biggrin] Actually finding an Epiphone with one of those 'e's still on is like finding a four leaf clover, a chicken with teeth, a rocking horse with sh... you get my drift. They are stuck on with a special glue which is guaranteed to fail within 30 days or you can get your money back. No, really. Check the warranty.

Joking aside, the black pickguard on my EA250 has a permanent 'e'. It's a faux mother of pearl job inset into the guard. I quite like it.

I would go one step further and remove the pickguard.

There are at least two of us. That pg sticker has got to be the cheesiest thing "they" could do to a guitar. Not only is it a symbol of cheapness, mine showed up CROOKED!

I did wait until I changed the strings and cleaned up the fretboard before I discarded the sticker and cleaned the glue residue off.

Branding is one place where Epi could do better, IMO. Second only to sourcing some quality switches and pots.

The pups are awesome though. I love my Ultra-339/ProBuckers! :)

Update: I have nothing against the E. My problem is that they're cheap bastards even with their own logo. You would think that they would at least care what the perception of quality is when it comes to the symbol of the brand.

It's a damn shame really. They are within about $20/unit of delivering genuine quality that wouldn't require the 'for the price' qualifier in any serious discussion.

Yeah zeplin one of mine has a pick guard & the other doesn't. I guess I prefer the one without. Much nicer aesthetically. It's not like some acoustic you're bangin away cowboy chords on and you might scratch it. I don't really need it to rest me pinky on so much after all either.

I think I'd only leave it on if they were paying me to endorse it. I don't see that happening anytime soon. I'll tell you though, I do dig these Epis very much. I've always been very Gibson & Fenderish. But we live in a changing world. A close friend of mine who's worked building one of the very high end acoustics for 20+ years says he's recently had to re-fret two brand new Gibs for friends. They showed up really sloppy. On gigs he plays an Epi (335?) & says you're not getting anything more for all the extra dough you'd put out for a name. That's unless you're in the market for a new $16K L-5 and you could probably do better there too. I don't live in that world but I think I'd go for a Heritage or even an Ibanez. Actually I might be willing to trade a body part for a Broadway Elitist (as long as the "E" on the pick guard is removable) ;)

I'm not overly fond of the raised E, but I do like the foil E's. They look right on hollow bodies, IMHO. "Actually I might be willing to trade a body part for a Broadway Elitist (as long as the "E" on the pick guard is removable)" I believe they are easily removed, as stated earlier. [rolleyes]

For me the toy grade double stick tape adhesive technique for attaching the E made it an easy call. Get it off my guitar. But then I took the E off the truss rod cover too. Just seemed superfluous. Looks cleaner also. Of course you are aware, this is my own almost shamefully humble opinion.

I may remove the "E" off of the truss cover on my ZBD, I would leave it if the color matched the inlays on the headstock but it is too bright for my taste..... [unsure]

I got the E off my truss rod cover with polishing compound. Then I hit it with Meguiar's clear plastic polish to restore the gloss.

I like the "E" on the truss rod cover. It's just that piece'o'crap they stuck on the pick guard. I like & respect the Epi name & insignia. You don't see any really high end quality stuff with that (the pick guard "E") kind of thing on it. It just screams "cheap". A lot of these are really quality instruments and I think that thing wasn't really intended to be permanent. Detracts from the beauty. But of course that's subjective opinion. But I see all these collections with that on there. Like it's Andy Warhol "art" or something. I'm not a collector though so I probably just don't understand. I just love beautiful guitars.

The "E" doesn't bother me, never has. What bothers me, is 3 hole

truss rod covers, and Asian "well" like Truss Rod cutouts. Why

not make the Asian versions, exactly like the old Vintage USA

versions, including the truss rod, and 2-hole cover! Just because

it's made in Asia, doesn't mean it can't be done "spec correct!"

[cursing][unsure] But, that's just me!

Mine is a Sheraton. With the tree of life, the binding and the logo the headstock was a pretty busy place. The E on the TRC just cluttered things up.

Speaking of Sheratons...WHY are we still getting 2 different body shapes?

I thought the whole point, of a "dedicated factory to only Epiphone" was

to better control, and keep the spec's consistent! Korean Sheratons,

still have the Samick (generic) body shape, while the Chinese versions

have a more correct Gibson ES body outline. At least that one, is in

the Gibson family. The Elitists, were the only ones (so far) that were

actually Vintage Epiphone correct, body shape wise. What's so difficult,

that they can't make them ALL the same vintage specs?[tongue]

It's not like Epiphones are going to hurt Gibson sales. It all goes into

Gibson's profits, anyway. So...WHY not make them Vintage correct [thumbup] ,

all the way around?![biggrin]
