J200 contemplating a purchase...

so the lovely Mrs Blast knows that I've had a J200 on the bucket list for a while now.

we've recently had a bit of a windfall as I got a pretty hefty bonus earlier this month from my job.

I would probably see what I can do with Sweetwater...

but I'm on the fence man,, this is a lot of $$$$$

And you want us to pursuade you not to buy one ..... ? [laugh]

The only piece of advice I can give, if you want great, great tone and have enough left over to also buy a J-15 is to get a used one from 2000- 2005. Dont know what they put in the water in those years but every J-200 Ive played from that period has been nothing short of smokin'

you're right. it is a lot of money. With that being true, AND the fact that you are on the fence, I would really suggest not just going the online route. Play them in person before you buy. I think this is good advice anyway if possible, but if you really aren't sure then it's necessary. If you don't have a dealer near you, it's still worth the drive (unless you have to go 10 hours one way or something like that).

Since it won't even threaten to "break the bank," go ahead and do it if you want it (especially when "the boss" tends to agree). Awesome guitars..........When the angel Gabriel arrives on Judgment Day, he'll want to be heard. He won't be playing a trumpet. He'll have one of the Gibson Superjumbos.

well I knew I could count on you folks!!!

Say,, have any of you guys thought about suicide help line as a line work?

seems some of you are a LOCK for that!

!!LOL!!

I've gone to a few guitar centers and while the ones around here have a lot of J45s, and the like, I've not seen any J200s in a while.

The few I've played though have been quite nice but I don't think I'd buy one from GC, any mook can go wail on one anytime...

Anyway, I'm inching closer to a purchase.. I've spoken with my boy Stu at Sweetwater, there is something potentially in the works,

I'll spill the beans when news breaks...

All hail to the great Mrs Blast, with out her urging, could possibly never happen, bonus or no bonus....

the bonus helped mind you,,,

I've owned two J200's. The J200 has always been my holy grail guitar. I traded a Rickenbacker 360FG 12 string AND an Epiphone Casino to get mine a few years ago. It looked like this:

An amazing, wonderful, rich guitar! You can fingerstyle with it and it has all kinds of definition. You can pound the living sh** out of it and it NEVER breaks up!

To my surprise, I had the opportunity to get this 1 of 75, 75th Anniversary Golden Era SJ200:

2015-08-29%2016.09.25.jpg

I had to give up my blonde J200 to be able to afford this Adirondack Red Spruce beauty. It was a tough give-up. The good news was, it went to a wonderful guy (local) who will cherish it (and I might actually see it again too).

You will never be unhappy with a genuine, Bozeman-made, SJ200. Just my $0.02.

Agreed

And they are just getting so sweet

I have two late arrivals from that period a '95 J200 and a ,95 J200 12 string and they are really starting to sing

Beware that a Gibson Super Jumbo is a big guitar. I find my J-100Xtra tough to get comfortable with while sitting at times. That said my 2005 J-100 Xtra is a GREAT sounding guitar. I think there was some magic going on in Bozeman that year. It started out sounding great (bought it new) and has only gotten better over the years. Here's a pic:

Thanks again boys,

I got a line on one that may be the one. will know soon. I think I'm going for it

and yea I know they are big instruments, and I'm not a big dude, (5' 7" about 160) I'll probably like a 5 year old playing his dad's guitar with one of them..

They've got a distinctive sound (if you fingerpick, you really can hear the different voicing), but know that it takes medium strings and a strong right hand technique to get the sound out of it. I'd really try to play one first, just to be sure.

Sir Johnt: Great to see you are still alive and picking. I am hanging in like Gunga Din. Doing

a little song writing with a friend. As nice as your two beauties are, wish you could try one of my

94 Bozeman Excellente reissues.

Best to you, yours and Fred. Nou Nou still has him on her back burner as things to do to. LOL

First: Hello to the preceding forum veterans who've just checked in.

Yes, the SJ-200's are big guitars; but no one says you've gotta play the super jumbo all night long. Funny: 58 Relic mentioned guitar comic/Shredmaster General Greg Koch and his Wildwood demo's; he dwarfs the thing/makes it look like a CJ-165:

As an added bonus- the SJ-200 blurs the line between art and instrument . . .

Agree - draths #2 is beyond. And the desert-coloured/emerald case nestles it so superb.

I'd go burst if a 200 was ahead. Besides keep an eye on the different guards. Prefer those with sideline and yellow spots in the flora.

The number of mop bridge inlays in less important - tho some say it affects sound.

Have a happy hunt

I've had four SJ200's. I'm currently downsizing and am at two. Both are customs (RW & Koa).

The last standard I had was a great guitar. Hated to let it go.

The first standard I had sounded like it was full of wet socks.

I found out it was over humidified. I've since been taking better care of the guitars and they sound great.

Find a good one and take care of it and you'll love it.

Deal with a 5-star dealer. I honestly believe they get the pick of the litter.

If Sweetwater doesn't come through for you, contact member Modoc33. Keith may be able to take care of you.

I bought the RW one from GC a few years ago. At that time, they told me they were clearing out all the J200 and would not be carrying them in the store. Only on-line or by ordering. I think they've went through another management change recently so I do not know what their policy is now.

Happy Hunting!
