Fatter Neck Fan Club

Polls on this forum show a definite preference for the "thin, fast, '60s style neck" than the fatter '50s style neck.

Although I love my Les Paul with the thin neck, I have to say I really prefer the fatter, rounder neck like I have on my SG Classic.

I guess a lot of people on this forum have smaller hands than I do? I also noticed when I was shopping for my LP that it seems that the thinner necks fetched SLIGHTLY more money than the '50s neck. :-k

Who else here prefers the fatter neck? [thumbup]

Fat needs to be defined, I always thought my first LP had a fat neck...that until I bought my LP R8.

At 0.93" at the first fret and 1.03" at the 12th its neck is massive and its also pretty round.

I would venture to say that the shape of the shoulders on a neck matter more than the difference in thickness.

I agree.

My friend who plays those Ibby shredder guitars thinks a pencil is a fat neck

I like something to hold on to myself

I prefer thinner necks...

Oh, you meant on guitars?!

Oh, yeah--well, I thought for a long time that the neck on my SG is pretty thin, but it's a lot thicker than the neck on my friend's vintage DeArmond (!!!) and I prefer my SG's neck, so...

Yeah. It's hard to say what exactly thick and thin are, objectively. Thick necks for me, too, I guess.

I'll agree that the thinner neck is not nearly as comfortable... but I can play a lot faster on it.

Frankly, though, when compared to my Strat, there is little about my LP that seems built for comfort.

Trade off for that Les Paul tone?

You betcha! I'll take it every time :D!!

You can add me that list too. I just bought my LPTraditional about a month ago and when I was checking them out, I definately liked the feel of it over the Standard, and I play a Strat too. What I like about the strat neck, though this has less to do with the neck and more to do with the body shape, is the ease of access up the neck. However, perseverance pays off. Just ask Carlos, Jimmy.....

The neck on Explorers are great, 50's on the first few frets and then the 60's taper starts after the 5th fret.

My issue with 60's necks is that a lot of them are too skinny on the first few frets where you don't need them to be that skinny. The slim taper is supposed to start past the first 3 frets but it is as if they call it slim taper when in reality is a skinny neck all around.

Narrow nut width is what drives me crazy, my Casino is a unique guitar but damn if the necks on them aren't too narrow and skinny.

That is exactly the way my '05 LP Standard is, and it's what I don't like about it: too skinny in the first three frets.

Completely agree on narrow nuts and Casinos. I don't feel that my Casino is a unique guitar though.

Does a 59 profile count as a fat neck? I love the neck on my Howard Roberts and it's supposed to have that profile. I find it fast too, though that might be something to do with the ebony fingerboard that graces it.
