What is your biggest non-essential..

Ok, so welcome back to me as I had a great vacation last week with the future Mrs.

On to business; the vast majority of us all know that we have prior necessary requirements that often take away from our guitar time, i.e Family, work, voulenteering, school etc. These are things that are critical parts of our lives and don't really count as distractions or interference.

However, if you think over how you spend your off time that you could be playing guitar, what is it that takes that guitar time away?

For me, I would have to say that my last few hours of the day (10pm-12am) is spent playing video games online with 3 or 4 fairly close friends. Now being a regular guy I never call my friends to see what's up with them, but chatting online while we play some Capture the flag or whatnot we talk about work, life etc. It's a vital part of my social interaction because I only see the guys a couple times a month if that.

They all had their power knocked out last night so I practiced Maleguena until I memorized it last night. I figure if I didn't have friends or an xbox to talk to them on I'd be playing bars by now.

Next!

Well, I only play Black Ops online a couple of times a week, but usually at night. I don't play guitar at night since I like to play relatively loud and my neighbors live fairly close.

I'd say my biggest distraction is finding the perfect tone for whatever song... Once I wasted an entire week getting a good overdriven and delayed tone, otherwise it sounded to fizzy....If the tone isn't good then I can't play...It will bug me to no end.

In the last day, my amp sounded great and I finished learning Django, (Joe Bonamassa)in a day.

I have lots of distractions. Friends, family, hanging out with my wife...

Guitar is recreational for me. I really enjoy playing but it is not my number one priority.

Probably why I only get in about 2 or 3 hours a week.

If I made a living at it, that would be different. But that will never happen. I don't ever want to be a starving artist. I'm too spoiled now.

Dave, I said non essential, we know our family and friends are essentials!

The lady friend will always take priority over practicing, because if I dont keep her happy I get no nookie and I have to resort to Palmela Handerson and some porn.

Artie calling friends is over-rated nowadays! Its all about crazy multi-person conference calls via Skype on a Saturday night or something, maybe tickling the strings of an unplugged guitar while enjoying some wobbly pops. A few of my friends try to do this once a month and its usually a hilarious gong show.

Actually either this or my history/philosophy e-list or writing/handling pix for non-work stuff.

My Mom sez I should go fishing or about anything else. <grin> Yeah, even at my age I'm lucky enough to have a Mom that cares and thinks I'm sometimes awfully young and occasionally foolish.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 at the moment.

I'd say fighting, but that is a necessary thing for me, not optional.

My TV time is coupled with wife time, so that's not really optional... and the "kids" are at the age where they have little time for Dad.

I was a pretty boss chopper pilot in BFBC2, we also were pretty crazy demolitions with C4 and an ATV with the extra ammo packs.

Mental illness is 100% a non essential and kills all motivation. Just want to lay on the couch and not do anything. Even TV is annoying.

Outside of that, NHL playoffs keep me from guitar unless it is a scheduled jam session or rehearsal. And I will purposefully schedule those to keep me from spending three hours watching sports.

As for non-essential distractions, the only thing I can think of is jumping in the pool. I probably split my free time with pool time and guitar time, usually saving the guitar time for when the sun goes down.

In the colder seasons, it's probably watching TV. I'm not into video games.

Of course all of the essential distractions take priority over anything else, and I have a lot of essential distractions. So my playing time is probably only a few hours a week and mostly on weekends.

Professors never turn off their brain. It's OK when you're young but it's starting to catch up to me now (can't live on 4 hours sleep anymore). Yeah I don't have to work like I do, but it's in my blood. Guitar is a must for me to relax.

My biggest non-essential distraction is probably playing horseshoes. my neighbor gets these huge horseshoe games going, with a bunch of friends and relatives. Whenever I hear that "clang, clang" I have to drop whatever I'm doing and walk down there. My wife just rolls her eyes when she hears them. She knows I'm gonna come back all dirty, smelling like beer and cigars
