Overpopulation and zoonotic viruses

We can expect more of these things.

Note to self: pass on the Shrew Shishkabobs next time,  Better late than never, I hope.

As an aside, I had a customer who quit his job, sold off his belongings and set out to walk the planet.  I heard from him about a year later and he said India was just eerie as he was out in the woods and there were no animal noises at all, they'd eaten everything.

Yes.. This was always going to happen as the population increases and we encroach on nature more and more..  This is how nature fights back.

What you gonna do??

The equation is simple..  Theres only a certain amount of resources on the planet. The more people there are, the less there is for everyone.

A million years from now, far, far away, in an unknown part of the universe, someone will be staring up at the stars and won’t even know that we existed.

Based on many factors, some caused here on earth, or others off-planet, I doubt it will take a million years before we are lost to history.

Probably a tiger out in the woods where he was while he was out there.  Following him around maybe.  Makes animal noise stop for long distances when they are about.

Y'know Steve.  There's plenty of woods one could go into where there aren't any animals at all.  And never were.  Except maybe insects. Perhaps your friend was in such a place.

I have friends that deer hunt every season.  To hear them talk they seem to find such woods all the time.  Frustrating for them though.  [wink]

And zoonotic  viruses have been with us for millennia.  and we still keep increasing in population.  I don't see this as anything to get alarmed about.

Maybe he went back, decided to ride a cow across India and that tiger got him while he was eating an infected critter purchased at the local market.

I shouldn't say that, I really liked him but never heard back after that one last time when he said he was going back out again after a brief stay back in the USA.

I would not go to India if you paid my way, put me up in a hotel, and paid for my food.

One of my friends used to have to go to India as part of his job,  he took a suitcase full of breakfast bars with him, which was all he would eat whilst there.

He told me that on one occasion as he was entering the plant he was working at there was a dead body on the other side of the road and it was still there at the end of the day!

He advised me never to go to India.

See It's not just me. I'll bet the curry you get there as compared to the stuff we get in Indian restaurant in the US will make you cry when you wipe.

The only people from India that I ever meet are all doctors.  And the only  people from India I ever talk to are all in "customer service".

The safety head at the company I worked for when I was a NASA contractor was from India, and I think he had a Ph.d in Math. We called him Dr. V., because we could not pronounce his last name.

I'm with you on this issue.  Add China and Africa to my no go list. Along with a host of other places .

As for population, it does play a roll, but so does modern travel, an infected person can literally travel around the planet, spreading crap around major airports,  filled with people who then spread it to every corner orvevdry city before the first symptoms appear.

We will be victims of our accomplishments,

I had to go to The Philippines several years back for work. I had layovers in Beijing one way, and Shanghai on the way back. I wanted to get out of China as fast as I could.

I’ve got a few friends from there, they’re catholic priests, you couldn’t find a bunch of finer men. The American priests could take a few lessons from these guys.

Yeah, we Americans are so evil, vile, and disgusting that even our Catholic priest are crap.  Nothing lime self loathing to win brownie points from people who hate us anyways.

I worked with so many immigrants who  have  left  China, Russia, India,  Brazil,  and even Great Britain to come here I lost count. To a person, they all expressed a greater appreciation of this nation than 85% of the Americans I know.

I've had the opposite experience. I worked with many people from other countries and all they talked about was how great those countries were. They all said they wanted to go back. One exception was a guy from Colombia, he never said anything. So, one day I asked him if he wanted to go back home. He said there was no way he was leaving the U.S.

Having been in several different countries in Asia and Europe I think a lot can be said about how safe you feel there. When I was in Manipur our group's security escort was carrying an AK47. In Bangkok we freely went where ever we wanted, Germany was like wandering around Disneyland. The people I interacted with were always curious about visiting the US but seemed secure with what they had, specially medical resources, specially Europeans. The cost of living in Asia is only a fraction of what it is every where else. I think Government stability is a big factor in people who desire to relocate to the US, like are they going to come and kill you in the night or simply allow you to starve.

A lot depends on exactly where and when you want to compare.

I worked with a young lady from Haiti,  I asked her if she would return her reply

"HECK NO" But with a little different h word. My neighbor who is from Bucharest?   Nope.

My Vietnamese friends? Not a fing chance.

One of the custodians that cleaned our office complex spent 3 years in a prison in Africa because he had a Bible in his house. He really likes it here.

One of the men who developed a program used to monitor air quality was from China, he spent 12 years pushing a wheelbarrow filled with rocks to build an island, his crime? His father was a mathematics professor in China when Mao took over.  He is in no hurry to return.

One of the hydro engineers  was from  Jordan, came here to study engineering,  he goes to Jordan every two years. No way is he ever going to move  back. In fact the only one who said she missed her native land was a Russian.  She said she has to many choices here, back in Russia the governmnent told you where to live, what to study where to work, and she only had to wait 15 years for a car she paid on all those years.  She left in 92 to come here. She has every opportunity to buy a ticket and return, but, nostalgia my warm the heart,  reality is quite different.
