Notes_Norton Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Check out this video from TED (I love ted.com but mostly for information and enlightenment, not entertainment). Jake Shimabukuro plays "Bohemian Rhapsody" on a ukulele. What he gets out of a 4 string, 2 octave instrument is truly awesome http://www.ted.com/talks/jake_shimabukuro_plays_bohemian_rhapsody.html Notes
pippy Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Magnificent stuff! The amount of invention required is equalled only by his skill as a player. I was delighted to see he got the standing ovation the performance deserved. The 6-y-old son of a friend is learning the Uke at an after-school club and I just know he'll be delighted to receive the link... Thanks for posting, Notes! P.
LarryUK Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I bet Brian may couldn't do that. It's amazing on such a small neck instrument. I'd like to se him and Brian do a duet. That'd be nice.
misfit Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Thanks for posting this!!! All I can say is WOW!
57classic Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Check Jake out doing "While my guitar gently weeps". It's incredible! I saw him live and would strongly recommend seeing him.
BigKahune Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Gently Weeps has been posted here before. Both are fantastic performances. Great stuff.
raine Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Incredible!!!! Excelent!!! and Awesome!!! It's terrible!!!
cabba2203 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I'll never call it a Pukealele again. That was great!
guitargreg1993 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 awesome ukulele is definitely one of the coolest instruments ever... love it!! now if i could just get my parents to let me buy one... unfortunately they think it's a "waste of money"...
Big Bill Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I just gained some respect for the ukulele. I'm in awe, this guy is fantastic.
Notes_Norton Posted February 2, 2011 Author Posted February 2, 2011 My father played ukulele, but he never played it like that. I inherited my father's uke, but I'll never play it like that either! I'm not only impressed by this young man's technical ability, but his musical sensitivity as well. I'm sure this won't be the last we hear of him. Notes
dbreslauer Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 loved this! thanks for sharing. i actually want to go buy a uke now. :)
milod Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 He's not using the little one that's tuned with two high strings that go "My dog has fleas." <grin> That's with the bottom (as normally would be the lowest pitch) tuned an octave higher than would be expected. The baritone uke - which I think is use here (???) is basically tuned as are the top four strings of a guitar. My Dad had a regular guitar before I was able to do much more than remember the thing in the attic, but later on got a baritone uke to chord on. This is excellent playing regardless... m
raine Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Now on Guitar! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=RxR7dVPKnD4
Goldenone Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 No doubt Jake is amazing! Maybe being born in Hawaii gives me some roots to the ukulele, I love the sound especially in Hawaiian music. Also Hawaiian slack key guitar. If you have never spent any time on the TED web site you should there are tons of inspiring speeches as well as music. Check it out. David

Artie Owl Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 If you get a chance to see this guy Rick Miller he does a lot of one man shows he's awesome;
surfpup Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 He's a whole lot better uke player than this guy...
