MorrisrownSal
This is a quick and dirty comp. I would love to hear this raw comp with the chops of Murph at the wheel instead... Excuse my rust!
J-200 Koa
I think the Martin wins this round.
JuanCarlosVejar
Sal, Loved them both. To my ears the D 18 had a bit more sparkle (or maybe it was just the pick you were using) The bird seemed louder. It seems they are Ying and Yang... Beautiful! Congrats on 2 fine guits JC
rbpicker
Both very good, but to my ears the D18 takes the lead. I enjoy these comps. Roger
fortyearspickn
Disagree. The H'Bird has more body and depth. The lows are deeper and growl and grab you. Sparkle is over-rated. My banjo sparkles. Clearly - two different tones. Another MaryAnn VS Ginger ?
Jalex
I like them both. I think the Martin was a bit more in your face and the Bird more mellow.
MorrisrownSal
Over the week I’ll come back with these two and a more polished demo... a better number. They are both awesome guitars. The Martin has Martin Retro strings, and the Bird has Martin flexible Core PBs, which feel so smooth. I have a dilemma with my J-50, as it has the new Expensive Titanium Strings. They just don’t die. And my dilemma is I am tired of the sound, and miss the Gibson string Zing. I just feel like I am wasting the strings if I take them off. That’s the downside of using pricy strings. george wooden
Sal, this is like separating the sheep and the goats, or the Martins on the left and the Gibsons on the right whichever, there is no right or wrong here. It is which tone sounds more pleasing to your ear. If you are a big fan of upper register tones then you pick the Martin, if the mid-range and lower register are more pleasing to your ear then you tend toward the Gibson. That is where these instruments natural voices lay, and we like it that way. Could be that is why so many of us are prone to owning both brands. Was I you, I would hang on to both of those. Tyler A
I like the sound of a the Gibson better. Thanks for the video!
dhanners623
I know we listen for the distinctions in guitars, but I wonder what our opinions would be if we couldn't see the guitars in the video. He just plays and then reveals afterwards which guitar played which snippet. That said, I think a good D-18 is hard to beat.
Jinder
The Bird snags this round, to my ears...the Martin sounds like a great D18, but the Bird has an extra dimension to the tone somehow. Any sane person would be overjoyed to own either, mind you-stunning instruments!
blindboygrunt
Martin for me there . But it was suited to that particular song. Whatever it was

Murph
The Bird snags this round, to my ears... Me too. I think the Gibson sounds deeper, bigger, fuller and tonier. The Martin sounds thinner to my ears. A great guitar I'm sure (Sal owns it...) but the Bird wins to me.
blindboygrunt
I can click on anything. How many did it with their eyes closed, cause the Gibson guys are gonna be biased towards the Gibson and the Martin guys are gonna be biased towards the Martin. There’s truth in that statement somewhere I’m a gibson guy and I like the Martin here though
E-minor7
Can't really choose. For me the main difference lies in the projection here. The Mart. having deeper roomier output, Bird tighter more focused, which is expected. Horses for courses. Which one one would sustain the longest with similar strings ? Hall
Like them both. To me, one sounds like a Martin D18 and the other a Gibson Hummingbird.
kelly campbell
I would have to say the Martin barely edges out the Bird, I hate to say that as I prefer Gibsons but love both brands. I own three Martins, so I am not one who can not appreciate a great guitar no matter what name is on it. Thanks Sal.
olie
To my old ears the Martin was cleaner and punchier while the "Bird" was muddier-the bottom end seemed to obscure the higher register.Different songs would probably favor one guitar over the other, as it often goes.I don't have a Martin but I sure didn't mind that D-18. kidblast
I wouldn't kick either one out of bed for eating crackers.. seriously while here is a big difference in sounds, they both sound great. I lean to Bird, however. just preference. I've never met a martin neck that I can get cozy with.
olie
So is everyone basing the sound coming from high quality lap top speakers. That is not where I usually go to get my uber SACD sound for Yes - Close To The Edge. Interesting that you can tell the quality of speakers from where you sit. Russell Davis
My ears enjoyed the 'Bird better. Much fuller and richer sound. Just a preference.
EuroAussie
I prefer the Hummingbird. To me its a typical reaction when i hear Martin and Gibson. The Martin is single dimensional (in a good way) while the Gibson just has more body, depth, overtones and mojo.
Mafy31
D18 sounds nice, but brighter. I prefered the bird though, seemed fuller and richer to me. This comparison is exactely what i would expect from both and is the reason i went for a bird.
