Not Disappointed With Gibson Guitars

Yup..  Had a Gibson since 1992... Never had one with any issues at all.. Not even a nut problem... My nuts are fine. All the guitars have ever needed is a good setup. I do get there are guitars with issues out there but either I have have been lucky enough to always get the good ones, I just dont notice minor issues like some do or people are just making more out of it that need be.. Ok so you get a car or guitar or whatever that doesnt work, you take it back and get another..  Boo hoo... Such a first world issue as they say.

When I lost all of my guitars (except my 75 Flying V at my Mom's house) 3 years ago and coworkers took up a collection, I immediately spent it on the guitar of my dreams - A Goldtop LP axcess custom. It is amazing in every way. The only acoustics I'll own are Gibsons. I'm sure Martins and Taylors are great, just not for me. I've always been a fan, since my Melody Maker.

May I ask which pickups the Gold Top has? Mine has alnico's and is a Standard. Sounds good but I've wondered about changing them?  I thought about P90's.

While it's easy to poke fun at our host's fondness for marketing buzzwords, fondness for dressing up like the long lost Ramones brother, the fetish for fake beat up guitars and penchant for penny pinching and price gouging, I've been really pleased with their products.

Everything I've seen from them recently has been really good.  A little set up for personal preferences and the guitars are excellent.

I don't mean to brag but a quick dressing with a welding tip file and my nuts are  to die for.

Anyone else?

Nicely said!  And, I think most everyone here has noticed the exceptionality of your nuts……Also most of us think you are nuts………And all of my Gibsons are great.

I've only had one that I didn't like and it was handled by Sweetwater with no problems.  They all tend to need some nut work.  No big deal.

Didn’t you look over 10 SG’s before you found one  that had an acceptable neck joint?

Yeah - I had one with a void in the neck joint that was so big that you cold have built an exit ramp through it.  But Sweetwater fixed me right up.  They had the guys in the warehouse check through a bunch of replacements until they found one that was just over six pounds and super nice.  So they checked through a bunch of them for me... Ones that weren't checked into their system yet.👍👍

My first Gibson was a 330 that I got in 67 that was reported to be a year old, it was a great guitar. By this time I had owned a few Epiphones which were my first US guitars. The 330 belonged to a friend of mine, I was transfixed by the way it looked and played, so I had to buy it.

I got the custom buckers not because I know anything, they were the newest and coolest sounding.

Interesting, I will have to see if the net has a video of them. I've never heard them as far as I know. Probably have somewhere in a concert?

Sound amazing through the Tone King Sky King (Blackface circuitry 6L6s). With coil split they sound like a Strat. In double mode overdrive really nicely. I've played 57 classics, burst buckers I and II and whatever came stock on my V. These are my favorites.

I played one video just before coming on here. They showed custom buckers vs burst buckers. Of course, my hearing isn't good, (I can't hear anything without aides and music just doesn't sound right anymore.) The Custom pickups sounded great but when compared to Burst Buckers, I could hardly tell a difference. The Custom pickups sounded a bit more smooth? I have a Gibson GoldTop standard and our sons Custom Limited Edition Epiphone with BurstBuckers sounds much better than mine. But then, I LOVE the P-90's in my Casino. It's the one I play most. Yeah, I'd like to upgrade my GoldTop.

That's another guitar I might have to get in the future? I never had a Strat.

I know it's a Gibson loving thread but I play my Strat  more than any other. My dad bought it for me as a graduation present in 87. In my very humble opinion, Gibsons kinda play themselves (meant in a complimentary way). Strats you gotta fight with a bit. I love it. Especially in the "in between" position between the b ridge and middle through a fender amp.

I definitely get that. My favorites are my 335 and LP Std, but I love my AS Tele, too. I definitely have to pay more attention to my technique to get that Tele to sound its best. I really think it's in the scale length.

First Gibson, purchased at a flea market around 1974, was a 1948 L-48 acoustic archtop with a pressed solid mahogany top, solid mahogany sides, and a solid mahogany fully-braced flat-back.  It had a wonderful sound & was unique enough that I’ve never come across another one like it.  Still regret letting that one go!

Since then, I’ve gone with Gibsons over & over again (along with a few nice Martins & Guilds).  Gibsons have consistently delivered what I’m after, both in tone & playability - including even a couple of very nice Norlin Era guitars (Dove & Heritage Custom).  There’ve been a few duds along the way that got returned or sold - but my current group (spanning 1922-2015) includes three made in Kalamazoo, three made in Nashville, four made in Memphis, and six made in Bozeman.  All are stellar instruments and have given me a ton of musical joy.

So many many thanks to the men & women who built these instruments, going back to 1922, that I continue to be inspired by today (nuts & all!).

I'm hoping they keep non-weight relieved models available every year from now on. Look at 'em: the other year they were down and out, now they're selling guitars like crazy. And the mark-up must be huge.

We've had the push-pull pots, the Star Trek V, the extra-wide fretboard (for when you find yourself thinking, if only the fretboard had an extra thousandth of an inch), the robot tuners, the chambered guitars with mazes inside them for which you can buy your very own Lifestyle Brand rat to inhabit, the this, that, other. Just make Gibson guitars, please.

Most people are not disappointed with Gibson. Its like me I've owned 25, or so Gibson's throughout my life, all have been great to excellent. I made a personal choice to play the brand I like cause of how it sounds to me. Same with my guitars from Nazareth all have been the same, all have been great to excellent. None of mine from both makers have ever had any of the issues you hear about from either company, but one day if, and when YOU do get that lemon how are you going to feel, and what will you do about it, and will you vent your frustration here?

In times like these it is getting harder and harder to go to stores and try out guitars before you buy, so sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and order what is online.

Merc, I hope you find one you like.

I have loved all of my Gibsons, the only problem I have ever had is with the fragile finish..

Gibson guys and girls do not what to give up their Nitro.  Anyone who works with it says its nasty stuff.
